| Joan Hoey is the Director and Editor of the Economist’s annual Democracy Index, recognised by governments, international organisations, corporates and academia as a leading measure of global democracy. She is a former Director for Europe in the Country Analysis division of Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). She is an expert in European political economy, with a special interest in democracy, governance, political risk, geopolitics and east European post-communist transition. Before joining The Economist Group in 1995, Joan worked as a journalist covering the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe and the post-communist transition. Joan is an accomplished chairperson: she has chaired more than 50 Economist events, including with prime ministers, presidents and senior government ministers and business leaders, and is an experienced public speaker who has spoken at many international forums. |
