| Maxim Vengerov is a world-renowned violinist, violist and conductor, born in Novosibirsk in 1974 and trained from age five, winning his first international competition at age ten. He won the International Carl Flesch Competition in 1990, launching a global recording and performance career, and his 1994 recording of Shostakovich and Prokofiev violin concertos with Mstislav Rostropovich and the London Symphony Orchestra earned two Gramophone Awards and Grammy nominations. Since 2010 he has also built a conducting career as founding chief conductor of the Gstaad Festival Orchestra, and in 1997 became the first classical musician named a UNICEF Envoy for Music. |
